For anything going on a website, WebP is the safe default — it is supported everywhere and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same quality. AVIF goes smaller still and is worth it for large photos, though it takes longer to encode. Choose PNG only when you need lossless quality or transparency, and JPEG when something old has to open the file.

It would — JPEG has no alpha channel at all — so we do not do it. If your image has transparency and you ask for JPEG, we keep a format that can carry it rather than flattening your image onto a background colour you never chose. Convert to WebP or AVIF instead: both are lossy formats that keep transparency.

Converting between lossy formats re-encodes the image, so there is always some generation loss in principle. In practice, at the balanced setting it is not visible. Converting to PNG is lossless. If the image is going into print or further editing, use the high-quality setting.
