When PNG beats JPG for an iPhone photo
PNG is lossless: every pixel that came out of the HEIC decode lands in the file unchanged, and it stays unchanged through every future open-and-save. That makes PNG the right target when the image is headed into editing software, when it contains text or screenshots captured to HEIC, when an application specifically demands PNG, or when transparency matters — HEIC can carry an alpha channel, and PNG is the safe place for it to land.
The cost is size: a photographic PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than a high-quality JPG of the same image, because photographs have no flat areas for lossless compression to exploit. For ordinary uploads and sharing, HEIC to JPG is the better default — this page is for the cases where fidelity outranks bytes.
An honest conversion, done server-side
Browsers mostly cannot decode HEIC, so this conversion runs on our servers with a native HEVC decoder — your browser only uploads the file and downloads the PNG. Rotation stored by the iPhone is applied to the pixels during decode, so portrait photos arrive upright in every viewer, including the ones that ignore orientation flags.
The privacy defaults match the rest of the site: EXIF metadata (camera details, GPS position) is stripped unless you toggle it on, transfer is encrypted, files auto-delete within 24 hours, and there is no watermark, signup or per-file fee. Where HEIC-to-PNG earns its keep
Concrete cases where this exact conversion is the right move: a HEIC screenshot going into documentation (PNG keeps UI text pin-sharp where JPG smears it); a photo headed into repeated editing rounds (each JPG save loses a little, PNG never does); a scanned signature or diagram exported from an iPad note-taking app (flat lines and transparency are PNG territory); and any app or CMS whose upload field literally says "PNG only". If none of those apply, JPG will serve you better at a tenth of the size.

A 12-megapixel iPhone photo converts to a PNG in the tens of megabytes — normal, but sometimes inconvenient. Is HEIC to PNG conversion lossless?
The PNG encode itself is fully lossless — every decoded pixel is preserved exactly. The one nuance: HEIC itself is a lossy format, so "lossless" means faithfully preserving what the iPhone saved, which is everything there is to preserve.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the original HEIC?
HEIC compresses photos aggressively; PNG stores them losslessly. Five to ten times larger is normal for photographs. If size matters, JPG or WebP output fits the same photo in far fewer bytes.
Does transparency in a HEIC survive the conversion to PNG?
Yes — PNG carries a full alpha channel, and any transparency in the source is preserved rather than flattened onto a background.
Can Windows open the PNG files this produces?
Yes — PNG opens natively on every Windows, macOS and Linux system, in browsers, Office documents and editors. That universality is exactly why converting away from HEIC solves the "file won’t open" problem.
