Why your iPhone photo won’t upload anywhere

Since iOS 11, iPhones default to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) — a modern format that stores the same photo in roughly half the space of JPG. Inside your Apple devices it is invisible and excellent. Outside them it is a constant paper cut: many government and application portals, older websites, Windows apps without codec packs, and plenty of upload forms simply do not accept it. The photo is fine; the format is the problem.

The same wall appears off the web: a fresh Windows install shows HEIC files as blank icons until a codec extension is installed, WhatsApp Web and many chat clients handle the format inconsistently, and photo kiosks or office printers may not read it at all. If a HEIC file won’t open on Windows or an upload form keeps bouncing your iPhone photo, nothing is broken — the two sides simply do not speak the same format.

JPG is the universal answer — every browser, portal, printer and operating system of the last twenty-five years reads it. Converting costs a little of HEIC’s storage advantage but buys total compatibility, which is exactly the trade you want at upload time. The decode runs server-side on a native HEVC decoder, so it works from any browser — including the browsers that cannot display HEIC themselves. Orientation is applied to the pixels during conversion: a portrait photo stays portrait everywhere, even in viewers that ignore rotation flags. Quality defaults to a visually clean JPG; a quality field is there if you want explicit control (80–90 is the sweet spot).
