How an MP3 compressor reduces file size — in plain language

Three numbers decide how big an audio file is. The first is bitrate — how many bits describe each second of sound. A WAV file spends about 1,400 kbps; a good MP3 spends 128. That is the whole magic trick: a modern encoder keeps the parts of the signal your ear actually resolves and stops paying for the parts it cannot, which is why a file can shrink to a tenth of its size and still sound right.

The second is sample rate — how many times per second the sound wave is measured. Music ships at 44.1 kHz, but human speech lives almost entirely below 8 kHz, so recording a lecture at 32 kHz loses nothing you can hear in a voice. The third is channels: stereo stores two copies of the signal. A phone voice note recorded on one microphone gains nothing from stereo, so folding it to mono spends every remaining bit on clarity instead of duplication.

This tool works those three levers for you. It reads the file, refuses to spend more bitrate than the source actually carries — re-encoding a 96 kbps podcast "at 192 kbps" would only grow the file — and never resamples or upmixes upward. If your file is already smaller than the mode would produce, it says so and returns the original untouched.

Music, voice notes, lectures or podcasts — which mode to pick

For music you plan to keep listening to, Balanced (128 kbps MP3) is the answer nine times out of ten: files shrink by 70–90% from WAV or FLAC and still sound great on phones, earbuds and car speakers. Choose High quality (192 kbps) for music you will play on good equipment — at that bitrate most listeners cannot pick the compressed file from the original. For anything that is mostly a person talking — voice notes, lecture recordings, interviews, meeting audio — use Smallest. It re-encodes at 64 kbps mono with a 32 kHz sample rate, which keeps speech perfectly intelligible at roughly a twentieth of WAV size. When a form or app names an exact cap, skip the guessing: the Target size mode takes the number in megabytes, computes the bitrate your recording's duration allows, and tells you honestly before you upload whether that target is physically possible — a two-hour recording cannot become 500 KB, and the tool will say so rather than deliver mush.

Your tags, your privacy, your file

Compression here never silently strips what makes the file yours. Title, artist, album and embedded cover art travel into the compressed copy by default — the one exception is the Smallest mode, which drops cover art to honour its name, and says so up front.
