What H.265 actually buys you

H.265 is the successor to H.264, engineered a decade later with far more sophisticated tools for describing motion and detail: bigger, smarter block structures, better prediction, better entropy coding. The practical outcome is simple — at the same visible quality, an H.265 file is typically 30–50% smaller than its H.264 twin, and the advantage grows with resolution, which is why it pairs so naturally with 4K footage.

The savings compound with Target Size mode: a byte budget that would force visible quality loss in H.264 often fits comfortably in H.265. Pick the Target size preset here and the planner uses your selected codec — the same 25 MB target simply looks better encoded as HEVC.

Why other tools charge for it — and this one doesn’t

HEVC has a complicated patent-licensing history for hardware makers and streaming platforms, and "H.265 export" became an easy line to draw between free and paid tiers of consumer tools. But the open-source x265 encoder is free software, and a web tool re-encoding your own files has no reason to meter it. Here it is a codec option like any other — same free pipeline, same no-watermark policy, files up to 2 GB with resumable uploads.

One technical detail matters and is handled for you: HEVC inside MP4 must be tagged `hvc1` for Apple software to play it. Many encoders emit the alternative `hev1` tag and produce files that work everywhere except iPhones, Macs and QuickTime — a classic silent failure. Output from this tool carries the `hvc1` tag.

H.264 or H.265: how to choose

Choose H.265 when you control or know the destination: your own devices from roughly the last decade, modern TVs, editing software, YouTube uploads, or storage where size matters most. Hardware HEVC decoding became common in phones and TVs around 2015–2016, so for most personal libraries it simply works.

Choose H.264 when the file is going somewhere unknown — an old office laptop, an embedded player on a website, a projector at a venue, a WhatsApp contact whose phone you know nothing about.
