Why 4K files are so enormous
4K is four times the pixels of 1080p — roughly 8.3 million per frame against 2 million — and every one of them has to be described thirty or sixty times a second. Phones deal with that firehose by recording at very high bitrates: an iPhone or recent Android shoots 4K at roughly 50–100 Mbps, which is 375–750 MB for a single minute. The camera encoder also works in real time on a battery, so it compresses conservatively, leaving a lot of size on the table that an offline encoder can reclaim.

Keep 4K when the footage will be watched on a 4K display, cropped or zoomed in an editor, or archived as the master copy. This is where H.265 earns its keep — it was designed for high resolutions and typically delivers the same visible quality as H.264 at a fraction of the bits, which is why this page pre-selects it. The trade-off is compatibility: very old phones, TVs and browsers may not play it, and the codec selector switches back to H.264 in one click if the destination is unknown.
Downscale when the video is heading to a chat app, a social feed or a laptop screen — most of those pipelines re-compress to 1080p or lower anyway, so shipping 4K just wastes upload time.
