How to compress a video to 10 MB (and actually hit it)

Ten megabytes is not a quality preference β€” it is a wall. Discord’s free tier, ticket systems and forum uploaders refuse a 10.4 MB file as flatly as a 400 MB one. This guide covers where that wall stands, the arithmetic of fitting under it, and how Target Size mode does the fitting for you.

Where the 10 MB wall appears

The best-known 10 MB wall is Discord’s free tier: attach anything larger and the upload is refused outright, with no partial credit for being close. The limit sits on the finished file, not the video inside it, so the only thing that counts is the number the file actually lands on.

The same ceiling turns up in quieter places. Support-ticket systems routinely cap attachments at 10 MB, forum software ships with defaults in the same range, and plenty of corporate mail gateways still bounce anything in double digits. If you have ever sent a screen recording to a help desk, you have already met this wall.

A quality preset is the wrong tool for a wall. Presets aim at how the video looks and let the size land where it may; a hard ceiling turns the problem around β€” the size is fixed and the look has to be negotiated inside it. The arithmetic, and what the engine does with it

The arithmetic is short. Ten megabytes is about 80 megabits, and a video spends bits per second, so divide by duration: a one-minute clip gets roughly 1.3 Mbps, which is enough for genuinely good 720p. The division is the easy part; the judgement calls after it are not. The right resolution depends on the bitrate, the frame rate, how much of the budget the audio should keep, and what the source codec already looks like. Setting the target β€” and knowing when 10 MB is too small

Codec can stay on Auto or be forced to H.264, H.265 or AV1: the newer codecs buy noticeably more quality per bit at the cost of encode time, and maximum compression versus fast encode makes the same trade for the encoder’s effort.

Sometimes 10 MB is simply the wrong number. A twenty-minute 1080p recording squeezed to 10 MB works out near 65 kbps β€” below what any codec can make watchable. At that point the honest moves are to trim the clip, raise the target where the platform allows it, or share a link instead of a file.
