The 25 MB rule — and the email fine print

Gmail, Outlook and most providers advertise a 25 MB attachment limit, and many upload forms copy the number. For a direct file upload, 25 MB means 25 MB and this page is exactly right. Email is sneakier: attachments travel base64-encoded, which inflates them by roughly a third — so a true 25 MB file becomes ~33 MB on the wire and bounces.

What 25 MB looks like on screen

25 MB is 200 megabits, and it stretches surprisingly far: ninety seconds of footage runs at about 2.2 Mbps — sharp 720p, clean 1080p for calm content — and five minutes still gets 650 kbps, watchable 480p–540p for everyday material. Lecture recordings and product demos, where the frame barely moves, remain perfectly usable well past that.

Better than shrinking: encoding smart at 25 MB

A generous cap does not mean the encoder should be lazy. When your source is already small enough that a bitrate-stuffed encode would waste bytes, the planner switches to a quality-targeted encode instead — it will never pad a file to “use up” 25 MB. Sharing on WhatsApp? Its video messages stop at 16 MB — the 16 MB page has that covered. Longer footage that deserves more room does better at the 50 MB target, which most modern portals and cloud shares accept without blinking.
